South Portland Adult Education offers ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes to South Portland residents free of charge. Classes are available in the morning, afternoon, and evening at three locations in South Portland.
There is an enrollment process to join.
All classes are full at this time. We are not enrolling new students.

College Transitions: Maine College & Career Access

Maine College Transitions is a complete college advising and preparation program that guides you to your goals. Whether you know exactly what you want, or have no idea what you want to do, our College Transitions program is the best place to start. Ease into a complete college preparation program that will set you up for success, step by step:
• Develop college goals and objectives
• Explore program majors
• Assess your academic skills readiness
• Receive academic remediation
• Understand financial aid and planning
• Receive assistance in the college application process
• Receive on-going support through your first semester of college

HiSET (The High School Equivalency Test)
with Multiple Instructors
The High School Equivalency Test (HiSET®) is a way for people who didn't finish high school to earn a diploma and get on track for college or a career. The exam has five parts: Math, Science, English, Social Studies, and Writing.
The state of Maine uses HiSET® for high school equivalencies, not GED. Your HSE credential will be accepted by every state, territory and jurisdiction, as well as by the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. military, and federal programs.
Eligibility:
- Age: You must be at least 17 years old. You must have withdrawn from high school to enroll in HiSET®.
- Residency: You must provide a government issued photo ID and (if needed) one other form of identification with your Maine address to prove you are a resident of Maine.
- Cost: The HiSET® program is free to Maine residents when taken through Maine Adult Education.
- English Skills: Multilingual learners are eligible to enroll when they have a CASAS score of 239.
